CELEBRATE THE AMERICAN CHESTNUT!!! This is the 25th Anniversary of the American Chestnut Restoration Program and thats cause for celebration! You are invited to the Anniversary Celebration at Meadowview, VA On Saturday, October 11, 2014. The Southwest Virginia Branch of the American Chestnut Foundation© (TACF) will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the American chestnut restoration program at the Meadowview Research Farms in Meadowview, VA and the long and continuing dedication of Dr. Fred Hebard, TACF Chief Scientist. The 25th Anniversary Celebration will take place from 2:00-6:00 p.m. at the Glenn C. Price Research Laboratory, in Meadowview, VA. This event is a unique opportunity for the public to learn about the restoration of the American chestnut, and enjoy an afternoon of food, live music, and fun. “We have accomplished a lot in our breeding orchards over the past 25 years so that we are now establishing widespread test plantings and reforestation trials in our forests” said Dr. Hebard. The public is invited to tour of the Glenn C. Price Research Farm starting at 2:30 PM. The wagon tours through the chestnut orchard will be led by Dr. Hebard. After the orchard tours, visitors can also tour the lab where advanced genetic research is being conducted and learn about volunteer opportunities. Activities for kids will also be included. The event will feature roasted chestnuts, light snacks with a chestnut theme, and locally brewed chestnut beer provided by The Damascus Brewery. A highlight of the event will be the raffling of pairs of potentially blight-resistant Restoration Chestnut 1.0 seedlings and other merchandise contributed by local merchants. One of the best ways to support American chestnut restoration is to join or renew your membership in The American Chestnut Foundation (see acf.org). Another way you can contribute is by signing up to volunteer. The Celebration is sponsored by the Southwest Virginia Restoration Branch of the Virginia Chapter of TACF.
