CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC: THE SITUATION IN BANGUI IS OUT OF CONTROL The nomination of the President last week seemed to have a positive effect on general safety conditions, but within the past few days the level of violence has soared again: armed skirmishes and looting are now daily occurrences in every part of the city. The war between armed groups has triggered outbreaks of violence even amongst civilians: there are lynchings in the streets, and cars blocked for no reason by men armed with machetes and cudgels. The people are afraid. Many are fleeing in the hope of finding refuge in the quieter provinces. Weve also lost some members of our local staff, whove decided to leave the country along with their families, heading for Cameroon and Chad. During the whole of yesterday we heard grenades and explosions close to EMERGENCYs Paediatric Centre, opposite the Parliament building. So far, thereve been about 20 deaths but we dont know how many people have been wounded - none have arrived at the Complexe Pédiatrique, but perhaps theyre unable to reach the hospital. EMERGENCY continues to provide free healthcare for the children of Bangui in its Paediatric Centre, opened in 2009, and with a war surgery team at the Complexe Pédiatrique. Were also working in two refugee camps that have sprung up near the airport, and at PK13 where there are hundreds of children who arent getting any medical care.
