CHALLENGE TO CHAPTERS The NSO office and Department will be reaching out to local media to spread the word about our continued service to veterans despite the shutdown. Chapter leadership, we are challenging you to do the same. We have an approved "Talking Points" message that is perfect for local newspapers and interviews (see below). We highly encourage you to reach out in every way possible to spread the word. We cannot sit back and wait for this to work itself out. Every single day a veteran is connected to their benefits because of the work we ALL do. Are you up for it? REMEMBER - WE ARE VETERANS SERVING VETERANS, BECAUSE NO ONE SHOULD GO IT ALONE. - If you make a connection be sure to let us know. - If your contacts are in need of DAV graphics feel free to refer them to me and I will be happy to help them out. Semper Fi, Ed ------------------------------------------------------- Talking Points Government shutdown or not, DAV believes that veterans are a national priority. That’s why we’re still on the job. Since the government shutdown that began at midnight on Monday resulted in veterans not having access to our professional advocates at Department of Veterans Affairs facilities, DAV has implemented contingency plans to continue providing benefits counseling and claims assistance to veterans and their families. Those plans include deploying mobile services offices to strategic locations and setting up shop in secondary locations. Government shutdown or not, DAV is going to make sure veterans have access to the benefits they’ve earned. We want to ensure that veterans, their families, and survivors have access the full range of benefits and services available to them. Veterans making the transition back to civilian life must overcome many obstacles, and we provide free programs that address their overall health and well-being. In addition to assisting with more than 300,000 government benefits claims for veterans and their families each year, we also: fund rehabilitation and counseling programs; work to address unemployment and homelessness; and provide opportunities for networking and camaraderie. DAV helps hundreds of thousands of injured and ill veterans each year. No other organization has empowered more veterans to lead successful and healthy lives. We understand the needs of veterans, because we are an organization of veterans helping veterans.
