CHAPTER 4 JNANA YOGA OR THE PATH OF RENUNCIATION WITH KNOWLEDGE - TopicsExpress

CHAPTER 4 JNANA YOGA OR THE PATH OF RENUNCIATION WITH KNOWLEDGE “On what is action and what is inaction; even men of intelligence are perplexed over this, hence I shall expound to you the truth about action, knowing which you will be emancipated from its evil effects.” This verse says even men of intelligence are at a loss to understand what action is and what inaction is. The knowledge of this truth consists in precisely grasping what action done with what motive or relinquished with what motive does not lead to bondage. He who comes to know this truth in reality can never perform an action or practice renunciation of action which may lead to bondage. It is said that one cannot ascertain the ways of faith by flawed untested awareness; by allusions of intellectual assumption one cannot ascertain what religion (faith) is or what is self-realization. Here it is inferred that action should be performed under the guidance of those situated in the promotion of ancient wisdom, who know of the ultimate truth and such action should not be based on what is popular at the moment in society. Even men of discrimination can be beguiled by the subtle nature of what is action and what is inaction. To clarify this Lord Krishna confirms that even those human beings endowed with discrimination and intelligence are bewildered by the subtleties of action and inaction; the actions performed by an aspirant for liberation are completely different from those seeking rewards for their actions.
