CHEERING FOR COLD & SUFFERING ? ...not quite In the big weather post I made Monday afternoon about some new data coming in respect to the winter of 2014-15 and the rapidly building snow cover in Siberia .....there were a few comments about the perception that people are cheering for cold and snow and suffering. And I thought now might be a good time to make a particular statement about that. I hate hurricanes. I hate tornadoes of any kind. But we also have to study them and research them and warn people...businesses and organizations so they are prepared. I suppose I do have a bias towards snow in that I like to see it but as many of you have noticed ...I get almost excited about a warm day in the month of MAY as I do about a snowstorm. Even though I am a Philly boy I have lived in Virginia for 21 years and I am deeply in love with the state and every possible facet of. The only place I love more than VA... is the US of A. If we take a look of the long view of things... it doesnt take brain surgery to know that one of the reasons why the land is so fertile between the Rockies and the Appalachian... WHY it is the best farmland in the world... is because of our weather and our weather history (climate). And our climate and geography --which are of course intertwined --also enabled the USA to develop very rapidly in a short period time at a pace almost Unique in world history. But the price we pay for this ideal geography and climate conditions means we also see some really amazing and at times exceptionally intense and destructive weather. While these weather phenomenon are important and do provide many benefits they also kill people and cause major damage and also destroy families. I never ever want any hurricane... any derecho any tornadic thunderstorm to ever develop. While these events are necessary for the atmosphere to balance out I consider each one of these types of these weather events to be an attack upon this country. Think about this for a moment. If you have ever been in the category 4 for 5 Hurricane or Tornado... If you have ever seen a school with the part of smashed into rubble ...knowing there kids trapped inside dying... Every day for the rest your life is different . You had a life up until that terrible event and every day since that event... its a different and alternate reality from what it should have been. Its not fair ..its not right but it is what it is. That being said.... there is a lot riding on this winter. Sure for some of us it is simply a matter of having a couple of snow days off or what have you. But what many of you dont know is that last winter we can really close to running OUT of energy in some portions of this country. The propane Gas Supply was essentially gone by early February !! The livestock population after the October blizzard of 2013 continue to suffer extreme losses because of the severe cold.. There are of course those out there who were severe weather hobbyist or nuts or fanatics. That is also the case with tropical weather and snowstorms and heat. etc etc I can only speak for myself : you should never mistake my enthusiasm for weather as a desire for something really intense / bad happen. However bad this winter may or may not be.... however bad the severe weather coming on Wednesday may or may not be over the middle Atlantic states... however severe the next landfalling hurricane may or may not be... Talking about it .....forecasting and discussing it ....letting people and businesses and organizations know about it is NOT... NOT... the same thing as wanting it to happen. For the very first time on this planet there is a life form which has the ability to see danger before its coming . To say take cover or get out of the way and afterwards to say Here let me help. Lets try and stick with that and stay away from the mindless shallow feel good-ism of the Pop culture. This is science Not Oprah ya know?
