CHIBAMBA KANYAMAS VIEWS ABOUT HIS FELLOW TONGAS I watched with great sadness Patrick Mucheleka (MP) go a great length justifying why people should vote a Tonga for president at the UPND Kasama rally. I fully sympathise with Mucheleka and all those identifying themselves with the Tonga tribe (and vice versa) at this critical stage, politically. If it was a campaign held in 1963 before Zambians lived, worked and married among themselves as is the case today, the campaign message would have been appropriate. I am imagining my son asking: Dad, why is that man talking so much about Tongas there on TV and speaking Bemba? He is telling people that Tongas are not tribalists, I answer back before he asks what tribalist means. It means if you are in class and a Tonga teacher walks in and discovers you are not Tonga, he will walk out; if you are sick and you go to the hospital and there is a Tonga doctor you will not be treated; or if you own a shop and a Tonga customer walks in, he will ask if you are Tonga before he buys anything. Quite seriously, are we a proud nation any longer; united to defeat the common enemy: poverty? Why should Edith Nawakwi fail to gunner enough votes by virtue of her gender when she, arguably, carries the most compelling and focused campaign message?
