CHICKEN Emergency Surgery -HAVE YOU EVER HAD TO DO THIS? OR HEARD OF IT BEING DONE? Last night we realized that Flitter - one of our main Serama Boys seemed to be having trouble breathing - picking him up - his croupe was as hard as a large rock - he was obviously struggling not to die - so we went radical - surgery to open his croup - AND it was FULL OF CRACKED CORN! We always include a little cracked corn in with his feed but last night it seems he binged! We removed a bunch - didnt want to poke too much with his chest open. We used Ambesol for a numbing agent. Weve been giving him water, vitamins, antibiotics and some nutriments with a dropper hour by hour. Hes mostly been sleeping - tucking his head behind his wings (which we saw as a good sign) AND just now - he was left alone for a moment in his towel on the couch - he hopped down (in a falling down purposely kind of way) - and as I rushed across the room - he stepped around and tried to peck at the carpet. (He got stitches and more Ambesol about three hours ago.) We so hope he continues to get better - the surgery was an immediate relief by the way - as the corn seems to have been blocking his wind pipe - it seems to have hydrated and swollen inside him. (!!) He may still die BUT he would have died in a few more minutes without the surgery. Scary. Poor Flitter - and his Poor Wife - Widget the Traveling Hen.
