CHILDREN CELEBRATE 25 YEARS OF CULTURE DIVERSITY by Kidman Basopo One of the important things God has ever created is a child small in size but packed with things that can shock you. That is why at CHIPAWO we say “Mwana anokosha” a child is the most valuable treasure without them there is no CHIPAWO. CHIPAWO is an Arts Education for development and employment program that deals with children from as early as kinder garden to high school. These children created in different ways and with different faces shows that God gave each and every one of these precious stones different talents. CHIPAWO helps children to pursue their dreams and talents. One may wonder how and where do we get these talented young people and how do we groom such young stars to be the future of arts. It’s easy I would say, doing what you really like and what you have always dreamt off is the best thing to do on earth and when you do it by giving it your best brings freedom of mind thus unleashing the unexpected. Sadly, most parents think that children must live according to their rules and they decide whatever they want for their children not allowing them the chance to realise their dreams. Some children are born to smile for the camera and audience whilst some to smile for customers. Some children are born to dance till their feet cant move anymore and some are gifted with hands to play instruments and because this is what brings them joy and they find freedom of expression in the arts. Understanding this concept led to the establishment of CHIPAWO centers in 1989, were children could/can go and experience their freedom. Its been 25 years now and CHIPAWO has been and is still working with children and youth who share the ideals of making a meaningful contribution towards the arts industry in Zimbabwe. It is not only songs and dances that we offer the children, but we connect themto their heritage and culture. Most children dont realise the beauty that is hidden in the Zimbabwean culture. At CHIPAWO, we use arts to link children to their heritage. Culture plays a very big role in every Zimbabwean and for the children at CHIIPAWO, they carry their identity everywhere we go. It is for this reason that many people have come to appreciate the children’s artistic expressions. They passionately express themselves because they have something of their own to say, whilst sharing their own experiences with many other children. Every good initiative always has a strong backing or support, CHIPAWO has received such from organisations like Culture Fund of Zimbabwe, Norwegian Embassy, National Arts Council of Zimbabwe, HiVOS, UNESCO, President Fund and it is because they believed in us we have grown bigger each day. HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHILDREN OF THE ARTS AND CULTURE!!!
