CHIRUNDU ELEPHANT PROGRAMME - IMPORTANT UPDATE :) The human side of a human/wildlife conflict situation.... This post is a little different to what you would normally see from me but none the less it as just as important. We are working on a human/wildlife conflict programme and so far we have focused solely on the wildlife side. Chirundu is a border town and as such attracts people from all over the country who are usually just trying to make enough to stay alive. Many of them have very few options and in particular these pictures show the group who are the most vulnerable. This is a picture of Rutendo pre-school in Chirundu. Thats right, they are standing in front of the class room they work out of. 2 nights ago some lovely individuals decided to rob the class room of anything and everything of value, including their school aprons, their generator and their toys (soccer balls etc). I am looking for some local sponsors to help me put together a little surprise for them. I do not want nor will I take money on this. I really am after sports gear, maybe some basic food and clothes that might fit & maybe even some stationery, pens etc. The items do not have to be brand new as I am certain these kids would be happy with anything I can put together :) I want these kids to know that they are not forgotten and are as much a part of the programme as our elephants. These little ones are the future of this country and if we can stand by them when they are in need then I can only hope that as they grow older they might stand by the wildlife we are trying to protect. I know some may call me naive for thinking like that.......well I have been called a lot worse so am happy to have that label added to the list :D I am planning on putting together a lot directed at the children of Chirundu in the future. If I can educate and inspire these young minds then our job will be just that little bit easier and I hope more successful.
