CHRISTINAS TRANSPORTATION STAFF, FACILITIES STAFF, AND SCHOOL STAFF AND ADMINISTRATORS ARE PREPARED TO ADDRESS THE CHALLENGES OF EXTREME COLD WEATHER IN A VARIETY OF WAYS PREPARATION FOR VERY COLD TEMPERATURES AND BELOW ZERO WIND CHILL The forecast is calling for very low temperatures combined with wind chills that will make it feel like it is below zero. The high temperature for today is expected to reach only into the teens or below. Christina’s Transportation Department will be prepared in the following ways: ** A crew of transportation staff members pre-starts school buses for 15-20 minutes before the drivers leave the bus yard. This ensures that buses are adequately warmed-up before they leave to pick up students ** Bus drivers engage in a pre-trip inspection of their vehicles before leaving the bus yard, which includes checking that all lights, radios, and systems are in working order. Heating systems will be monitored, and any issues with vehicle heating systems will be addressed immediately ** The Transportation Dispatch office may be contacted at 302-454-2281 (press 1) if buses are running behind. Buses can be late arriving at expected times due to unexpected mechanical or road issues caused by cold temperatures Christina’s Schools will be prepared in the following ways: ** Building maintenance personnel have been instructed to keep heating levels at an “occupied” status throughout the night, to maintain building warmth and system temperatures ** All buildings will be closely monitored by school and district level staff for student and staff comfort ** Students that attend schools with uniform dress codes will be allowed to wear additional layers of warm clothing (sweaters, sweatshirts, etc.) in non-uniform colors ** Students will be kept inside the building during scheduled outdoor recess times ** Younger students will be checked at the end of the day to ensure that they are wearing hats, scarves, mittens, etc. before leaving for dismissal ** Arrival and dismissal times will be closely monitored so that students spend a minimal amount of time outside after arriving at school or dismissing from school The District asks parents to please consider the following: ** Please take extra care in monitoring your children’s clothing choices. The National Weather Service suggests Children should wear several layers of loose-fitting, warm clothing a hat, scarf or knit mask to cover the face and mouth, sleeves that are snug at the wrist, mittens or gloves, and a water-resistant coat and shoes. ** Talk to your children about the importance of being prepared for the cold. If your child waits at a bus stop, let them know how important it is to keep mittens, scarves and hats on while outside.
