CITIZEN Q: An ultimatum to health-care workers: get a flu shot, or wear a mask. The province’s medical officer of health says he wants a policy in place next year that forces health-care workers to get the shot or put on a mask around patients. Right now only about half of those working in our hospitals get a flu shot. He’d like to see that number around 90%. It’s a policy they have in other places, and while it did push up immunization rates, he couldn’t say if fewer patients actually got the flu because of it. The head of the Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union says it’s too early to start forcing flu-shots and wants to study why health-care workers don’t get immunized.
