CITY OF CAPE TOWN 25 NOVEMBER 2013 MEDIA RELEASE City’s service provision to Riemvasmaak shows commitment to redress The City of Cape Town’s R5,5 million roll-out of electricity and full flush toilets to the community of Riemvasmaak in Lotus Rivier is on track. Read more below: The City’s Electricity Services Department has commenced with the electrification of 672 informal dwellings in the Riemvasmaak informal settlement in Lotus River. It is hoped that this will aid scholars in their studies, improve the environment for the start-up and expansion of small businesses, and enhance the safety of residents in general. Additionally, by the end of November 2013, the City’s Water and Sanitation Department will have completed the installation of 270 full flush toilets in the area. Approximately 90 toilets were installed in the previous financial year and are already in use. The electrification (which is expected to be completed in April 2014) and the installation of full flush toilets will cost around R5,5 million. Local labour is being utilised by both contractors for these projects. Furthermore, the City’s Solid Waste Management Department has provided every dwelling in Riemvasmaak with a door-to-door weekly refuse collection service in addition to providing free plastic bags to each dwelling to contain their waste pending removal. There is already ongoing removal of litter and illegally dumped material in the area which has created jobs for residents from the area. The City took responsibility for the land from the Western Cape Government in November 2012. ‘These projects are a demonstration of the City’s commitment to redress, service delivery and enabling opportunities for residents,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Utility Services, Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg. To ensure the continued provision of services to all informal settlements, the Utility Services Directorate has budgeted close to R1 billion for water, sanitation, electrification and solid waste services in this financial year. The budget has increased approximately fourfold since 2006/7. In this financial year, the City plans to install approximately 7 710 connections in various areas. The City is also funding Eskom to fit approximately 20 000 connections to a number of informal settlements and Temporary Relocation Areas. Connections either recently completed, in the process of being completed, or earmarked to start within the next few months include: By the City: • Burundi • France • Link Road • Lwandle • Hangberg • Kosovo • KTC • Sweethomes By Eskom through City funding: • Enkanini • Phola Park and Never Never • Fisantekraal • Bosasa The City is planning to install 1 300 full flush toilets in this financial year. Since 2011/12 the City has installed over 1 100 full flush toilets in various areas, including: • RR section • Village Heights • Bonnytoun • Imizamo Yethu Since 2006/7 the total toilet provision to informal settlements (including full flush, chemical, container and portable flush toilets) has increased from 14 591 to approximately 40 700 – an increase of 278%. ‘It is through constructive partnerships with different spheres of government, Eskom, and most importantly with communities, that we are able to deliver these fundamental services,’ said Councillor Sonnenberg.
