We research, analyse and convene to generate and share knowledge and take action to strengthen civil society. To achieve impact we communicate, campaign and advocate. CIVICUS is seeking to recruit a Senior Policy and Research Officer to coordinate the development of CIVICUS’ research activities on civil society and civic space issues. The successful candidate will help CIVICUS develop and launch several new tools we are developing to measure and compare the health of civil society across the world. The specific job objectives include: Identify key research priorities for CIVICUS in conjunction with other departments and stakeholders; Design innovative research tools and methodologies to measure and compare the state of civil society and civic space; Enhance organisational understanding of key global trends in civil society research; Explore, develop and maintain relationships with various stakeholders to advance organisational research goals; Contribute to positioning CIVICUS as a leading and unique knowledge resource on civil society issues; Provide research support to various CIVICUS departments and projects; Contribute to CIVICUS’ internal knowledge management processes and systems. The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications, knowledge, skills and work related experience: Qualifications and Experience Post graduate qualification in Social Sciences, Political or Development studies, International Relations or a related field; At least 5 years work experience in the management of social science research projects within a civil society context, preferably an international context; and Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams and managing highly qualified staff. Knowledge Thorough knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies; Good knowledge of development and political concepts and theories as they relate to civil society; and Good knowledge of SPSS usage. Skills Skills and experience in qualitative and quantitative data analysis, research methodology design, research publication writing and production; Good communication and interpersonal skills; Good public speaking, presentation and workshop facilitation skills; and Good analytical and problem solving skills. Desirable PhD in Social Sciences, Political or Development studies or International Relations would be desirable; Previous experience of working in a multi-cultural team would be an advantage; and Proficiency in at least one of the identified languages: Arabic, French or Spanish. Location: Johannesburg, South Africa. Start date: as soon as possible Duration: Initially a 2 year contract will be offered. Salary: Salary offered ranges between USD$51 727 - USD$63 803 per annum depending on the level of relevant skills and experience.
