CJ PUNO DISOWNS GROUP CALLING FOR PRESIDENT’S RESIGNATION Funny things are bound to happen in this funny world. As quickly as a smallish newspaper carried a news report today that a group purportedly headed by former Tarlac Rep. and Philippine Olympic Committee chair Jose “Peping” Cojuangco, a presidential uncle, was calling President Noynoy Aquino to resign, a prominent jurist has come out to openly disown the group, saying he did not join them in their call for the President’s resignation. Retired Supreme Court Chief Justice Reynato Puno, in a broadcast interview this morning, swore that he did not have anything to do with the reported call of the so-called National Transformation Council for the President to resign. He has denied the report identifying him as its head. How did he become the head of an organization, which he did not join anyway, is something for the books. The way Puno has disowned the group says an essential thing - the call for the President’s resignation was not taking off – in the past progressive tense. It was not generating steam. The news report said the group was calling for ten million signatures for the President to resign his post. Ambitious plans are always bound to fail. It is doubtful if it could even get a hundred thousand signatures. What if the President’s supporters initiate a similar signature campaign to gather 11 or 12 million signatures in support of the President? What would happen to the ten million signatures they could gather? That is assuming they could get that ten million signatures. The problem with any signature campaign is that it is easy to counter. After the one million signature campaign that convinced Cory Aquino to run for president in 1986, any other signature campaigns have yet to scintillate the imagination of the Filipino people. One of the initiators of this group is Lipa Archbishop Ramon Arguellas, one of the so-called “Pajero bishops” and a religious comic, who had become infamous for his forgettable quotes. He is the same bishop identified as a running dog of GMA and ex-FG Mike Arroyo. The other organizer is Carmen Pedrosa. Never mind Carmen; she is no hotshot. Given the quality of leadership of this movement, it is doubtful if it would ever succeed. At best, it could provide us some comic relief or entertainment on how a movement fails the moment it is launched.
