CLEST virtual library: The Rhetoric of Economics, by D. McCloskey (1985, 1998) Do not let economists know ... that economics is a sui generis science. It is a discipline that, like all others, and like sciences in general, is also - and mainly - rhetoric and conversation. Economists are not experts, but persuaders, and should first discuss the methods they use to persuade, rather than adhere to a fake “falsificationism”. Magics and metaphors, at least until economists do not pretend, on the contrary, to discover natural laws. Thus economist Deirdre (formerly Donald, as told in the book Crossing. A Memoir, cfr.http :/ / deirdremccloskey/) McCloskey of Chicago, in an essay dated 1985 (published in Italian three years later by Einaudi), who opened the season of postmodernism in economics. Supported, as obvious, by heterodox strands in search of alternatives to the mainstream. Arjo Klamers (klamer.nl/) work continues the discussion (literally) started by McCloskey.
