CLIMATE | Changing the Culture Wars Evangelical Christians - TopicsExpress

CLIMATE | Changing the Culture Wars Evangelical Christians haven’t always been climate change deniers. In his role as the chief lobbyist for the National Association of Evangelicals, Rev. Richard Cizik made relentless efforts to get evangelicals to make efforts to stop global warming. Then climate change denial joined hands with evangelical Christianity and in 2007. Over two dozen evangelical leaders rallied together to oust Cizik from this role at the NAE. Rev. Jerry Falwell termed global warming “Satans attempt to redirect the churchs primary focus” away from evangelism and towards environmentalism. Cizik was ousted from the NAE in 2008. Less than a year later, professor Katharine Hayhoe and her husband (an evangelical minister) wrote the book, A Climate for Change. It explains climate science in ways that reflect conservative Christian beliefs rather than antagonizing them. She recently appeared in the climate change documentary, Years of Living Dangerously, and has subsequently been invited to speak at churches, Christian colleges, and other conservative groups. Apart from the hardcore deniers in her audiences, audiences mostly respond to her talks by asking what they can do - being a scientist who does not dismiss their conservative Christian values.
