CLOSURE OF REXXAM Firstly, my thoughts are with the workers at Rexxam Electronics and their families during this very difficult time. I was made aware of the issues at Rexxam a number of weeks ago. I made immediate contact with management of the company and I met with them in order to establish how the company could be assisted to remain open. I have also been working over the last few weeks with IDA, my own Department & SIPTU to try to identify ways to support the viability of the firm. The IDA has been working with the company for a couple of years now, conscious of both the fact that the company was almost entirely dependent for its business on one major client in Scotland and the ongoing decline over the last decade or more in circuit board production in Ireland and Western Europe for the global electronics industry. Faced with the loss of their major customer and a consequent decline in their business, the company has made a commercial decision to close. The factory is not being relocated as some sources have claimed. I have requested that all the supports of the State be made available to the workers affected by this situation. Solas, the Department of Social Protection, the Local Enterprise Office service and the support of a range of other State agencies will be made available on a one-to-one basis to all workers at Rexxam to examine their employment and training options. The difficulties faced by Rexxam is a reminder that the fight to sustain and win new jobs is a continuous one and the challenge to maintain our attractiveness for investment in an increasingly competitive market is a challenge we must take on each day. I as Minister will continue to work closely with IDA and Enterprise Ireland to ensure that further investment and job creation can be secured for Drogheda. We are taking some important steps in this regard and I will continue working to secure significant investment in the town.
