CNPP PRESS RELEASE: Imperative of Clean Voters Register - by: Osita Okechukwu - May 26, 2014 It is disheartening that less than twelve months to 2015 crucial general elections that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to have a Clean Voters Register; after Nigerians had invested N88 billion. The hope then was that having invested N88 billion to procure Data Capture Machines, and provide other logistics, a Clean Voters Register, could have been the outcome of the registration exercise involving the most modern biometric technology of Advanced Automated Identification System (AAFIS). To our greatest shock and chagrin the same INEC waited for three good years before it will announce to a bewildered citizenry that 4,105,215 fake voters in 13 states of the federation were discovered and that they could not find the Biometric Voters Register in many polling units across the country, dishing out some lame excuses of crashed discs or negligent of States Resident Electoral Commissioners. Accordingly, reports reaching us from our field officers is worrisome as alleged covert move is being made by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as APGA did in the November 16 2013 gubernatorial election of Anambra State to simulate a controversial Voters Register to scuttle the 2015 general elections. For example Enugu State, in Nsukka local government area alone, 230 Polling Units Voters Register out of 280, Igbo-Etiti 190, Nkanu-West 148, Igbo-Eze North 25 have been declared data crashed polling units, same is applicable in Gombe and other states. Field reports also indicate that the PDP in collusion with INEC officials are warehousing uncollected Permanent Voters Cards(PVC) to be later cloned for voting in the 2015 general elections. Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) is of the candid view that we must get 2015 general elections right and to achieve this no political party should be given preference to the other by INEC; therefore INEC should do the following:- 1. Search thoroughly its central Data Base to save the electorate repeat registration. 2. Announce at every polling unit the numbers of PVC it has. 3. To declare the total PVC remaining after the exercise at the polling unit, local government area and national level. 4. Insist that each person must dumb-print before collecting the card, for it is being observed in the breach. Mr Osita Okechukwu National Publicity Secretary CNPP
