COFFEE WITH MOM - Mom was asleep in the sunroom. Im always careful when I approach her & make sure she recognizes me before I get too close. The staff tell me she gets mean if they come upon her unexpectedly. She smiles and says shes sleepy. She just wants to sleep. I wave a cup of PJs Carnival Blend under her nose, unsure if she still can smell. She takes it gladly & begins sipping as we ride the elevator down. Its hot she informs me. Dominican is just letting out & girls & cars are everywhere. Its a lot to see. Action. I set her in the big window and I take a seat in one of the big upholstered chairs. We watch the girls & the cars and, as I knew, Moms eyes were eventually drawn to the big Red Oak in front of the building. She studies it then looks at the big Red Oak a few dozen feet away. Here it comes: I just dont like the way that tree looks. He doesnt have anything. That one does. This is a summer tree, Mom. Its going to get leaves in the summer. Really? Yes. There are so many airplanes over there. I dont know if they know where they are going. They are just all over the place. Girls, Mom - not airplanes. Yes, girls. They all are everywhere & no one is telling them what to do or where to go. Its amazing that they all are getting along OK. Well, I also think that it is amazing that they can find their ways to their rides home. They are going home now. Their Moms & Dads are picking them up. I hate to see that tree looking like that. You know all about how to do that dont you? Yes. I do. Somebody is going to come chop him up because he just looks so bad. Nobodys going to chop him up. Hes a summer tree. Hes going to look good when it gets warmer. Really? Do you have your ride? she asks, indicating her wheelchair. No, my car is in the parking lot. But wheres your ride? She gets confused on who uses wherlchairs. In her world, everyone uses one. Im going to walk for now. We need to get back home before dark. The girls have all gone home. The street is clear of cars. Up we go, back to the fourth floor - aka, New Orleans.
