COLD WAR QUESTION 3 - 3. Did your school have air-raid drills during this era? What were some of the procedures? -oh you bet we did! It was called “duck and cover”. Simple really, and meant to not necessarily protect you completely from a blast, but to minimized as best it could the damage done to you. For us here in California it was fairly simple, you duck under your desk at school and cover your head with your hands. That was it. We were warned about getting away from windows as glass could turn into flying knives and do a lot of harm. We had no air-raid shelters as nearly all school and home construction was done on slabs of concrete or short piers (2-3 feet above ground), so there were no shelters to go “down” into in southern California unlike many parts of the country, especially back east, where nearly every place has a basement of some sort. I did not know it then, but we were more of a sitting duck out here for a blast that would blow us away, and reduce our survival chances to nearly nil, than our fellow citizens who could get to a shelter underground.
