COMMEMORATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE DAY IN EASTERN AFRICA Draft PRESS RELEASE APPEAL FOR EASTERN AFRICA COUNTRIES: BURUNDI, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO KENYA, RWANDA, TANZANIA UGANDA AND SOUTHERN SUDAN TO REINFORCE INTENATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. We, the undersigned campaigners for international criminal justice in Eastern Africa countries united under the Eastern Africa International Criminal Justice Initiative (EAICJI) being is implemented by: ICJ Kenya, CHESO, Human Rights First Association for Rwanda, ACCAJ, ACAT Burundi, Foundation for Human Rights Uganda and Sudanese Human rights organisation in Seven countries of Eastern Africa namely: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan , join all state parties to the Rome Statute, interested non-state parties and other stakeholders around the world to celebrate the international criminal justice day on this 17th July 2013. We congratulate the 2010 Assembly of State parties to the Rome Statute during Review Conference of the Rome Statute held in Kampala (Uganda) where they declared 17 July, the date of adoption of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, to be celebrated around the world as the Day of International Criminal Justice every year to recognize the emerging system and efforts for international criminal justice around the world. We have decided to commemorate this international criminal justice day in each of the above countries in eastern Africa by calling upon the citizens on this 17th July 2013 to observe a moment of silence during the day to remember victims of serious crimes in our countries. This calm commemoration will give an opportunity to give thought to the victims who were innocent but heinously killed most of them being most vulnerable groups of our civilian population: Vulnerable communities, Men, Children, Women, persons with disabilities, elders, the sick. We call upon countries in Eastern Africa and beyond that have not yet signed, ratified and/or domesticated the Rome Statute and the Kampala amendments to do so as soon as possible to prevent commission of international crimes and redress victims of these crimes. We further call upon the ICC to be more conscientious and expeditious in executing its mandate to uphold the integrity of this noble organ for international Criminal justice around the world. Signed by: ICJ-Kenya, CHESO, the Congolese Association for Access to Justice, Human rights Association for Rwanda, ACAT Burundi, Foundation for Human Rights, and a Sudanese CSO.
