COMMENTARY: I have noticed, for quite a long time now, that if you look in the various newspapers (NY Post, NY Daily News, Newsday) youll find at least one reference to 1968 every week. I find this quite interesting. Even though there might be a reference to a year before or after our graduation, it still is based around 1968. I have accumulated a ton of articles and wanted to post each and every one. As time slips away, these articles sit and wait to be posted. Needless to say, there is quite a stack. But even more fascinating are the feelings that are growing inside me of what all this means. Why this rash of 1968 references? For example, this past super bowl made reference to a super bowl long ago. Joe Namaths guarantee and you guessed it, 1969, but why? There were accolades for Peyton Manning as one of the all time best quarterbacks and that, I surmise, resurrected the memories of Broadway Joe. There are countless references to our childhood growing years and the people that made them so special and most of the news was of their passing. I find myself asking, no, not another, or not him/her. For some reason, I suppose as a child, I thought they would never die and they wont as long as I stand and breathe. So its the sadness of knowing that I am seeing the final gasps of my childhood generation. Our years are behind us now and they were glorious and this sadness is preventing me from running a special column of 1968 news articles in homeroom. I have grown yet again about my reality of maturing. It was such a special time we grew up in. Tom Brokaw started his career in 1968 in California on the intersection of Haight and Ashbury. The Beatles, probably the first most significant change in Rock and Roll ever to be accomplished, were introduced. The Worlds Fair, just a engineering marvel that would challenge any Disneyland, was also in 1964. The NY Mets, WHAT? 1969 World Champions. The 1969 NY Jets, their only super bowl victory. One step for man, one giant leap for mankind. JFK, RFK, MLK. McHales Navy, Father Knows Best, Daniel Boone, Jim Bowie, ZORRO, The Danny Thomas Show, The Dean Martin Show, The Red Skeleton Show, The Ed Sullivan Show, Lassie, Amos and Andy, Our Miss Brookes, The Soupy Sales Show, Officer Joe Bolton, Captain Kangaroo, Mr. Green Jeans, Twilight Zone, Thriller, ZACHERY, Chiller Theater, Leave it to Beaver, Boris Karloff, My Three Sons, The Ozzie and Harriet Show. Geez. Each and every one a classic and yet we took them all for granted. This was what entertainment should be. I guess what Im asking is should I post these articles from our past? Now, I kinda wonder if I should, as I look across them and feel an emptiness even sadness for todays kids that this is what I grew up with and my generations happiness is slowly slipping into the ages with faint memories of a greatness never to be seen again.
