COMP GIRLS: I have found it has become more and more common- and a huge concern amongst bikini/fitness competitors as to finding the correct category that you are suited to. Within certain federations you are now able to compete in numerous categories. But when judged fairly, you should not place in both bikini and fitness. A clear definition needs to be made between the two categories. So how do you determine whether you should be competing in bikini or fitness? -Muscle mass. Do you have enough muscle development to compete in fitness, if not you may be better suited to bikini. -Body fat levels. Do not get tied up to a goal number!! Everyone pinches differently, the most important thing as a competitor to remember is that if the same person is doing it consistently and you are dropping, you are a step in the right direction. In order to compete in fitness, you should have a clearly defined 6-pack This is controlled with body fat levels, not the amount of sit ups you do. If you do not feel you are going to make it, maybe do bikini instead. -Rounds Fitness you are required to wear fitness wear as well as bikini, so the expenses may be greater as you need to consider shoes also. -Abs Do you have a clearly defined 6 pack? If you answer yes to this, then you should be competing in fitness, if you have a softer mid section, then bikini is a better fit. Bikini judging criteria: A shapely and toned figure Fitness judging criteria: Physique should display a fit body, with a nice abdominal region Still lost? Please remember, that this is all a very subjective sport. The judge may like blondes, you may not be confident enough etc -YOU ARE NOT DEFINED BY A PLACING ON STAGE! Please do not feel disheartened if you do not place, no doubt you have learnt a hell of a lot about your body, you have lost fat and may have gained muscle. I have also found that with our clients, girls seem to feel that bikini is not as prestigious as fitness- please do not ever feel this way. It is a huge accomplishment to even step on stage or lean down enough to even put on a bikini! If you have any problems, (and do not have a coach) the best idea is to contact the federations promoter for more advice. Doing additional categories can get really pricey and you should only do well in one or the other. Sophie Guidolin xx holdyourown.au for coaching.
