COMPETITION, or COLLABORATION? This is a HOT topic for me, and I was just reminded of it from my pal Val Neighbors recent Facebook post. I thought it was worth discussion for sure. I have two distinct experiences around competition....... 1) I once tried to PURCHASE a program from someone who did similar work as me. Different audiences, but similar work. I am a learning junkie and always looking to expand my knowledge and thought I could learn something from this person (this was not about trying to plagiarize someone elses work). I was told I couldnt purchase it because I was a competitor. 2) When I first moved to Tucson, I called on three people who did work in an area that my clients often requested. It wasnt an area that I wanted to work in, so I was looking for a strategic partner that I could refer business two. Because each one of them saw me as a competitor in the bigger sense, they all declined to work with me. Um, lost revenue AND lost respect. Thats how to do business! I am a big believer in collaboration over competition. There are 7 billion people in the world, Im pretty sure theres enough to go around. It just doesnt even cross my mind to worry about competition. We all have our own style and our own specific specialties. Please, stop worrying so much about the competition, and have faith that your work will draw in the right people. Collaboration will draw in way more success for you than competition. So whats your take on Competition vs Collaboration?? Any fun stories to share?
