COMPLICATED LOVE Yesterday I reached into the mail box and pulled out a package. Inside I saw a DVD of the movie I loved most when I was in college -- LAST TANGO IN PARIS. My Facebook friend Evellen Jewett had sent it to me, along with a note: Thanks for the stories. I sat down at the kitchen table reading the note and began to cry. My son Ben was eating a hard-boiled egg and looked over at me warily: Are you crying because youre happy about your present or crying because I ate some of the Easter eggs Zach and his friends just made? Dont eat the Easter eggs! Theyre supposed to sit there and be PRETTY! I said. Anyhow, Im crying because Im deeply moved by Evellens gift and by her note. This movie has always meant so much to me. It shows love as something complicated. Which is how I see love. And when I met Dad, I asked him to go see the film with me. It was a kind of love test. And he passed the test? Ben asked. No. He failed the test. He thought the movie was a pretentious piece of crap and he fell asleep during the most dramatic part. And he didnt even fall asleep on ME. He fell asleep on the shoulder of this stranger sitting next to him. I kept trying to wake Dad, but he kept falling asleep on the man. Finally the guy whispered ITS OKAY and so I passed my popcorn to the guy. Ben thought about this and said, It sounds like Evellen really gets you in a way Dad never will. Shes beautiful and brilliant and so funny, I said. An amazing attorney whos brave enough to go see her clients in prison. I admire her so much for the work she does -- despite the fact shes a dog person whos into sports. Ben said, Maybe Dad should have married that man he fell asleep on. Sounds like a really easy-going guy. And you should have held out for Evellen. I bet SHE would have passed your love test. I looked at Ben as he cracked open another beautifully dyed Easter egg and thought about how lovely Facebook is. None of our Facebook friends EVER ruin all our beautifully dyed and decorated Easter Eggs. And so I wish you a very Happy Easter and may you spend this day with people you love...no matter how complicated that love is, no matter how many times they or you fail a love test or eat your beautifully decorated Easter eggs.
