COMRADE: CODE RED By Eddie Ashioya PUNCHLINE: It’s not that titles honor men – but men that honor titles. A barking dog never bites? Or let’s say that maybe, just maybe, the teeth were wiped out clean with clean bank notes. Moi University Shop Owners (MUSO) has become a defunct barking dog whose teeth are only seen under the help of an electric microscope. And the teeth entail only ‘well-written’ memos, circulars and notices that do little but show us the prowess of the School of Education, Department of English Literature and Linguistics, course unit ‘ Intensive Persuasive Writing Skills’. The true test of leadership is in virtue, justice and courage. It is not on giving up on your followers no matter the cause or reason. It is in leading your subjects, relentlessly, whether you have the urge or not. And I must acknowledge that if MUSO, led by the Student Greedy…er...Governing Council is offering leadership, then I must be under the wrong institution. I guess that’s why they call it ‘A university with a difference’. In their time of need, comrades looked up to the SGC, who were nowhere to be found. In their utmost need for leadership, the SGC was, unsurprisingly, missing, and comrades proved once again that just because the shepherd is away on a tete-a-tete, the sheep shall definitely not die of hunger...or anger. I do not believe in rumors, and I definitely, ain’t no rumor-mongerer, but I have picked up (in)credible sources who claim that probably MUSO were bought over. But of course we already knew that. Every man has a price indeed…and definitely there are two ways of winning over your enemies: Buying their silence- or eliminating them. We can see where MUSO fell. Did they sell us out? What happened behind closed doors in the corridors of power? Why did none of the top officials neither address nor send a memo, (as usual) to willing, attentive, loyal, irate comrades? But as always comrades proved one thing: a comrade is always right- even when they are wrong. Comrades are still waiting for a directive, nay, a memo from MUSO concerning the ‘successful’ demonstration. Yet Monday night errant calls to the crème de la crème of the SGC went unanswered, ignored and assumed- or the few that were answered were told “Call later”. Apparently a senior SGC member who owns the chair was ‘detained and his phone held captive.’ Apparently, he was also released immediately after the heated up demonstration. Wipe that smile from your face. Chants of ‘Boit must Go’ rent the air on Tuesday mid-afternoon as comrades trekked the meager 50 kilometers from campus to Cheptiret to make their voice heard. And boy did they leave a statement. After seeing such might, valor, integrity and dedication, MUSO can only stand and stare as irate comrades now turn to defunct gutter leaders to ‘show them the way.’ Having being relegated to the sidelines, MUSO has become a toothless lion- dangerously harmless. I guess it’s true what they say, an army of a sheep led by a lion shall always defeat an army of a lion led by a sheep. What is right is not always popular – and what is popular is not always right. And while it is good to be both right and nice, in this case I’d rather be right than nice. This SGC wants to be nice, cold-blooded, lukewarm watermelons that do not have the guts to face its comrades, its subjects, its followers. It’s an act of cowardice to have no stand. But injustice to a comrade anywhere is injustice to comrades everywhere. In the words of Arrow’s Oliver Queen, the Vigilante, “27th SGC – You have failed this Campus!’
