CONCEPTUAL TO SAY THE LEAST. I went to this exhibit at the Guggenheim with dear pal Sheila Stainback expecting to see verdant landscapes, lush tropical-style oils and water colors and vibrantly hued portraits of doe-eyed Latinas. Instead the Guggenheims focus on Latin American Art has gone modern as in very modern and conceptual as in very conceptual. Theres a shopping cart made of fluorescent lights to call attention to the plight of the homeless and plastic produce stuck on a kitchen rack. There are projections on a wall of white squares for the viewer to imagine his own art within the spaces--meant to signify the lack of attention most museums around the globe pay to Latin art. Henry Kissinger once dismissed Latin American Art as insignificant and not worthy of consideration- opining that great art only emanated from Europe and the old Masters. Well he might sniff at whats being displayed at the Guggenheim but for modern-day art aficionados its tough--at the very least--to just look away. Could it be that conceptual art is the new rage and an antidote to old thinking on what we call art nowadays? Not your grandmas Mona Lisa. C.
