CONDITIONS ARE NEVER PERMANENT: With so many Americans focused on the riots in Ferguson (as opposed to the oppressive conditions that create such responses), let me just say this: We know that hundreds of American citizens--nearly ALL OF THEM of Color--are killed by police & security every year. While we may not prefer the violent response, we should at least put in the intellectual work to understand it sociologically. What are folks left with after centuries of betrayal by a criminal justice system that is shot-through with racism at every level (from number of arrests to fatal police shootings to skewed sentencing laws, etc.)? How many more graceful and dignified Black mothers and fathers have to cry in front of the cameras? Understanding the riot as the voice of the unheard (to quote Martin Luther King, Jr.) is a critical and necessary reframing; it directs our frustration more fruitfully at the root causes/structures of inequality--rather than the victims of that inequality. I think we learn so much more when we are willing to ask the critical questions--and then pull ourselves up out of our depression, and act. Conditions are only permanent if we allow them to be. Ill be damned if we let this become our new normal. #EricGarner #MikeBrown #JohnCrawford #OscarGrant #2Many2NameThemAll
