CONFESSIONS OF A SANSKRITIHOLIC - by Samaa Ali Behind Closed Doors The night of Friday, March 14th,tired from a long day of work and desperately fought to keep myself alert behind the wheel. Determined to discover the reason for my summoning, I drove up to the address that held the answer. No one was around. Darkness shrouded the seemingly abandoned neighbourhood. A large house loomed before me, its wide doors daunting. I shivered as I stepped out of my car; was I cold or was it something else? Tiptoeing along a stone pathway, I craned my neck to see through frosted windows. There was no indication of lights on inside, nothing but more blackness. The unbearable silence hacked away at my sense of safety. My discomfort was palpable as I reached the doorway – should I go on with my objective or run back to the safety of my car? I took a deep breath, calming my nerves, hoping the tingling would subside. Then I rang the doorbell. That’s when Puja’s family welcomed me in with a warm smile and open arms, took the fruit platter I was carrying, and led me into a bright and spacious living room (with many lights aflame), where I settled into a plush couch along with my beloved dance mates. We had all gathered for a highly-anticipated event: the script reading of Rhydhun 2014: Om Shanti Om! Okay, okay, so perhaps I’m not the best at mystery. The narration of the script, however, by the multi-talented (not to mention downright gorgeous) Amitha, with assistance from the creative mastermind herself, Puja, legitimately left me with a case of the heebie jeebies. Om Shanti Om is a murder mystery that has all the magnificence of Bollywood fused with the elements of an engaging plot. The story I heard was enough to get me fidgeting in my seat and tearing holes in Puja’s couch cushions as I fought to contain the drama queen within me. I limited my reactions to squealing and whimpering. Going down a dark corridor to get to the bathroom at break time had me questioning any notion of bravery within me. Please don’t let the killer behind the door get me! When your imagination turns the story you’ve heard into your own reality – now that’s good writing! Kudos to the creative team that have been working long hours on the script of Om Shanti Om and I have no doubt that this will be a production that everyone will enjoy, performers and audience members alike. A murder mystery musical that will move you – get ready, Toronto!
