CONNECTING TO GRANDMOTHER MOON The Energy Of The Moon For early pagan cultures, the Moon was often referred to as Grand Mother Moon, watching over Mother Earth and preceding Father Sun across the sky. In ancient cultures, the Moon was seen as the dominate force in the sky. It has been suggested that the common chant at full moon rituals The Sun becomes The Moon is based on this perspective. However theres no evidence that ancients chanted this phrase and its purely a modern invention to denote the cycle of energy. Its also an inaccurate view of how the ancients viewed the the moon in relation to the sun. Today we think of the day/sun as the predominate time period and the night/moon following the day. In ancient cultures, time was governed by lunar calendars and the idea that the new day began as the moon rose. In this modern chant The Sun Becomes the Moon, The Sun (the God) shines on Mother Earth giving her light and warmth. Grand Mother Moon shines on her at night and directs her flow of energy (the tides of the ocean and our bodies). In this perspective, the Sun allows the Mother to grow and the Grand Mother provides her with guidance through her life. Another perspective Ive come across is that the Sun represents male energy, which in the pagan world is associated with the Physical world. The Moon represents female energy and the spirit world. The phrase then takes on the meaning that we move through under the Sun and under the moon we discover the spirit. As with most things in the pagan world, there isnt one symbolic meaning or perspective. Different cultures and societies all put their influence on symbols and come up with their own correspondences. Even in these early times the connection between feminine spirit and energy and Grand Mother Moon was strong. Each phase of the moon brings with it a special energy for that lunar cycle. Everyone knows the moon affects the tides of the worlds oceans, but because we are mostly liquid ourselves, these phases also affect us humans too. This is certainly true for women and their monthly cycles. Statistics have shown the majority of new births occur during the phase of a full moon, adding to the mystic of the Moons connection to feminine energy. Today youll find a majority of pagan groups holding special Full Moon Rituals to honor Grand Mother moon. During these rituals practitioners, including men, bring forth the feminine side of their natures and connect to the energy of Grand Mother Moon. Those natures include compassion, love and nurturing of the spirit, the self and those around you in your life. Anyone who feels drained from lifes stress; high paced activities and demands can often feel run down and zapped of energy. Today its easy to give compassion and nurturing to others at the expense of our self. This is especially true for women who often looked upon as the dominant nurturing force in a family. Taking a little time to connect to the moon can help restore some of that energy and restore that sense of nurturing the self. Grand Mother Moon Ritual You dont have to conduct a full moon ritual to benefit from connecting to Grand Mother Moon and her energies. A personal ritual to revitalize your energies can be just as effective. A Grand Mother Ritual can be done during any phase of the moon, but during a New or Full phase is best. Simply find a quiet place to sit where you wont be disturbed for about 30 minutes. Light a white or pink candle if youd like and turn on your favorite meditation music. As you move your thoughts into a relaxed state imagine a silver cord, like an electrical extension cord, traveling from your solar plexus (where the rib cage meets at the bottom of your chest). See this cord traveling out into space and plugging into the Moon. Visualize Grand Mother Moon sending back pink and white Divine light to energize your spirit and body. Imagine this energy filling your physical being as if filling a glass with light until it is spilling over. When you feel an abundance of energy, sit for a moment and see this light re-energizing your physical strength, nurturing your thoughts and consciousness and filling you with a sense of Divine compassion. When youre ready to end the meditation, say thank you to Grand Mother Moon. Give her any offerings you may have prepared before hand, then imagine your silver cord unplugging from the moon. Watch your silver cord return to your physical being, getting safely tucked back inside. Give yourself a few moments to reorient yourself to your surroundings. Then go about your day or night with a new sense of positive loving energy about you. Its a simple meditation ritual that can have a great deal of positive influence over an individuals psyche and perspectives. It often leaves a person feeling relaxed, cared for and uplifted. And sometimes, it can even help a person feel a little closer to that giant glowing orb in the night sky with a smile and comforting spiritual hug.
