CONTINUATION we have deliberately included in this article the rules of Ibn Tayimiya,CONTROVERSY or WHO IS FOOLING A WHO,and watch the outcry at the end Fasting Ashura When One Still has Days to Make Up From Ramadhan The fuqaha differed concerning the ruling on observing voluntary fasts before a person has made up days that he or she did not fast in Ramadhan. The Hanafis said that it is permissible to observe voluntary fasts before making up days from Ramadhan, and it is not makruh to do so, because the missed days do not have to be made up straight away. The Malikis and Shafiis said that it is permissible but is makruh, because it means that one is delaying something obligatory. Ad-Dusuqi said: It is makruh to observe a voluntary fast when one still has to make up an obligatory fast, such as a fast in fulfilment of a vow, or a missed obligatory fast, or a fast done as an act of expiation (kafarah), whether the voluntary fast which is being given priority over an obligatory fast is something confirmed in Shariah or not, such as Ashura and the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah, according to the most correct opinion. The Hanbalis said that it is haram to observe a voluntary fast before making up any fasts missed in Ramadhan, and that a voluntary fast in such cases does not count, even if there is plenty of time to make up the obligatory fast. So a person must give priority to the obligatory fasts until he has made them up. [Al-Mawsuah al-Fiqhiyyah, part 28, Sawm at-Tatawwu] Muslims must hasten to make up any missed fasts after Ramadhan, so that they will be able to fast Arafah and Ashura without any problem. If a person fasts Arafah and Ashura with the intention from the night before of making up for a missed fast, this will be good enough to make up what he has missed, for the bounty of Allah is great. Innovations Common on Ashura Ibn Tayimiya was asked about the things that people deople do on Ashura, such as wearing kohl, taking a bath (ghusl), wearing henna, shaking hands with one another, cooking grains (hubub), showing happiness and so on. Was any of this reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in a sahih hadith, or not? If nothing to that effect was reported in a sahih hadith, is doing these things bidah, or not? Is there any basis for what the other group do, such as grieving and mourning, going without anything to drink, eulogizing and wailing, reciting in a crazy manner, and rending their garments?rments? His reply was: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. Nothing to that effect has been reported in any sahih hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) or from his Companions. None of the Imams of the Muslims encouraged or recommended such things, neither the four Imams, nor any others. No reliable scholars have narrated anything like this, neither from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), nor from the Sahabah, nor from the Tabiin; neither in any sahih report or in a daif (weak) report; neither in the books of Sahih, nor in as-Sunan, nor in the Musnads. No hadith of this nature was known during the best centuries, but some of the later narrators reported ahadith like the one which says, Whoever puts kohl in his eyes on the day of Ashura will not suffer from eye disease in that year, and whoever takes a bath (does ghusl) on the day of Ashura will not get sick in that year, and so on. They also reported a fabricated hadith that is falsely attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), which says, Whoever is generous to his family on the day of Ashura, Allah will be generous to him for the rest of the year. Reporting all of this from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is tantamount to lying. Then he [Ibn Taymiyyah ] discussed in brief the tribulations that had occurred in the early days of this Ummah and the killing of al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), and what the various sects had done because of this. Then he said: An ignorant, wrongful group – who were either heretics and hypocrites, or misguided and misled – made a show of allegiance to him and the members of his household, so they took the day of Ashura as a day of mourning and wailing, in which they openly displayed the rituals of jahiliyyah such as slapping their cheeks and rending their garments, grieving in the manner of the jahiliyyah ...… The Shaytan made this attractive to those who are misled, so they took the day of Ashura as an occasion of mourning, when they grieve and wail, recite poems of grief and tell stories filled with lies. Whatever truth there may be in these stories serves no purpose other than the renewal of their grief and sectarian feeling, and the stirring up of hatred and hostility among the Muslims, which they do by cursing those who came before them … The evil and harm that they do to the Muslims cannot be enumerated by any man, no matter how eloquent he is. Some others – either Nasibis who oppose and have enmity towards al-Husayn and his family or ignorant people who try to fight evil with evil, corruption with corruption, lies with lies and bidah with bidah – opposed them by fabricating reports in favour of making the day of Ashura a day of celebration, by wearing kohl and henna, spending money on ones children, cooking special dishes and other things that are done on Eid and special occasions. These people took the day of Ashura as a festival like Eid, whereas the others took it as a day of mourning. Both are wrong, and both go against the Sunnah, even though the other group (those who take it as a day of mourning) are worse in intention and more ignorant and more plainly wrong … Neither the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) nor his successors (the khulafa ar-rashidun) did any of these things on the day of Ashura, they neither made it a day of mourning nor a day of celebration … As for the other things, such as cooking special dishes with or without grains, or wearing new clothes, or spending money on ones family, or buying the years supplies on that day, or doing special acts of worship such as special prayers or deliberately slaughtering an animal on that day, or saving some of the meat of the sacrifice to cook with grains, or wearing kohl and henna, or taking a bath (ghusl), or shaking hands with one another, or visiting one another, or visiting the mosques and shrines and so on … all of this is reprehensible bidah and is wrong. None of it has anything to do with the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) or the way of the Khulafa ar-Rashidun. It was not approved of by any of the Imams of the Muslims, not Malik, not ath-Thawri, not al-Layth ibn Saad, not Abu Hanifah, not al-Awzai, not al-Shafii, not Ahmad ibn Hanbal, not Ishaq ibn Rahwayh, not any of the Imams and scholars of the Muslims. [Al-Fatawa al-Kubra by Ibn Taymiyyah] Ibn al-Hajj (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned that one of the bidah on Ashura was deliberately paying zakat on this day, late or early, or slaughtering a chicken just for this occasion, or – in the case of women – using henna. [Al-Madkhal, part 1, Yawm Ashura] We ask Allah to make us followers of the Sunnah of His Noble Prophet, to make us live in Islam and die in a state of faith. May He help us to do that which He loves and which pleases Him. We ask Him to help us to remember Him and be thankful to Him, to worship Him properly and to accept our good deeds. May He make us of those who are pious and fear Him. May Allah bless our Prophet Muhammad and all his family and companions. This he did not mentioned though he knows and dont want others to know. +1 # Manfred Petry 2013-11-11 22:33 Surah Al-Maeda O ye who believe! I feel really sad for the Shia believers, the fact that they openly hate/denounce/d efame a selected few that were so close and beloved to our Nabi (SAW) and Allah (SWT). Learn the history of what and why it happened and the revolution of Imam Husayn a.s. in the hearts of believers. The commemoration, not mourning, is wajib in order to maintain understanding of demanding righteousness and forbidding falsehood (amir bil ma3roof wa nahee 3an almunkar). Otherwise, no one alive today was around at that fateful day, thus no one today is to blame for that horrific crime which took place against the family of the seal of prophets pbuh. People who are for humanity under aJJl ta3ala, understand that unity is most of the essence, especially in this era in which we live. All our brothers and sisters of who believe in the oneness of God and understand the need to stand against oppression and demand righteousness must, I repeat, must (wajib) to stand together and unite against oppression which has engulfed the world and pay allegiance to the long awaited Imam a.j. in order to fill the world with justice and harmony as it has filled with corruption and oppression. The Imam a.j. is waiting and God waits for us, humanity, to unite under His word of righteousness and equality across the lands. Salaam. -2 # Mohsin 2012-11-24 13:01 Fasting Hadith and Narrators::: The hadith relating to the fast of Ashura is narrated in Imam Bukhari’s Sahih; Imam Muslim’s Sahih and Imam Tarmizi’s Sahih. Thus, it is narrated in three of the six available Sahih’s. When we look at any narration which tells us about an act of worship such as fasting, we must analyze the chain of narrators in order to confirm its reliability. Ibn Abas, Abu Hurraira, Abu Musa al ashari and Muawiya are the narrators who claim that the prophet recommended the fast of Ashura. The above hadith is meant to have been mentioned when the prophet arrived in Medina in the 1st year of Hijra. Hence, we will examine the activities of the narrators at that period of time: Ibn Abas was four years old when the prophet arrived in Medina and the hadith was mentioned. Ibn Abas was born three years before Hijra. If we assume that he was with the prophet at Hijra and Ibn Abas heard every single bit of the narration, he would have been four years at that time. According to many scholars of hadith, a four year old child is not exactly the most reliable resource. Abu Musa al Ashari came from the tribe of Ashar in Yemen. He converted to Islam before Hijra and since that day till Khabar, he was no where to be seen. This is because the prophet sent him back to Yemen to spread the religion of Islam and consequently he could not have been with the prophet in the 1st year of Hijra since he was in Yemen. The first glimpse anyone had of Abu Musa was after Khaibar. Abu Hurraira converted to Islam in his early years and was only seen in Medina after Khaibar which occurred in the 7th year of Hijra. Now, if you weren’t even at the event, then how can you narrate what happened? Muawiya converted to Islam in the 8th year of Hijra which is seven years after the mentioning of the hadith relating to the fast of Ashura. Thus, can you label Muawiya as being a reliable source? -3 # Qamar 2012-12-02 20:47 Of all the comments the only one I found useful and felt compelled to reply... Thank you for your kind research. I hope people use their power to reason and distinguish right from wrong, which are the basic values of being a muslim. Reply | Reply with quote | Quote | Report to administrator +1 # Mohsin 2012-11-24 12:58 1. The Jews had their own calendar and months. There is no logic in saying that they fasted on the 10th of Muharram - unless it could be proved that this date always coincided with a Jewish day of fast???????? 2. The month in which God delivered the Israelites from Pharaoh was Abib (i.e. Rajab), as the Bible clearly says: Observe the month of Abib, and keep the passover unto the Lord thy God: for in the month of Abib the Lord thy God brought thee forth out of Egypt by night. (Deut., 16:1) ??????????? 3. There is a point to ponder for the Muslims: The Prophet (s.a.w.) was sent with a religion to abrogate all previous religions and shariah. How was it that he deigned to imitate the custom of the Jews?????????? 4. Moreover, the 10th of Tishri is not related to the savior of Moses and the children of Israel but rather the 10th of Tishri is the day the children of Israel paid atonement for worshipping the calf when Prophet Moses and some companions went to Mount Sinai. As a result of this incident, the Jews fast on the 10t of Tishri. However, the hadith relating to the fast of Ashura claims that the Jews were fasting on the 10th of Tishri due to the savior of Moses and the children of Israel! Rather, the savior of the children of Israel occurred on the 15th of Nissan in the Jewish calendar and the 15th of Nissan in the 1st year of Hijra corresponded to the 23rd of Ramadan. Hence, if there should be a fast which is recommended then it should have nothing to do with the 10th of Muharram but rather the 23rd of Ramadan. +2 # Noorani 2012-11-28 11:47 Arab people, just as any body else, had fallowed lunisolar calendar till 632 CE. In lunisolar calendar, lunar months adjusted to solar year with an extra intercalary 13 th month added every three to four years. Most of the ancient calendars started their new years either with the spring equinox, falls on 20 March or with the Autumn equinox, falls on 22 September. Roman and Jewish new year started in Autumn where as Indo-Persian calendars with Spring. Arabs tribes started their first month Moharram in autumn synchronizing with Jewish legal calendar. Jews have several new years, one for legal year, one for festivals, one for financial year, one for academics. Their civil year starts in the month of Nisan celebrating Passover, Exodus from slavery and their firstborns fast a day before Passover. Their legal New year starts with Rosh Hashanah on the first day of Tishri month, celebrated as the day of birth of the world 5773 years ago. They also believe, from the New year day onwards GOD reviews every persons deeds from the foregone year and inscribes each persons fate for the coming new year into the Book of life. God waits till the Tenth day for atonement known as YOM KIPPUR, giving them a chance for their repentance before sealing the verdict. At the end of that day they consider absolved by God. Unlike on a regular day with three prayer services (evening, Morning and the afternoon prayer) Yom Kippur has five prayer services and traditionally they observe this holy day with a 25-hour long fasting! +4 # Noorani 2012-11-28 11:53 My understanding is that Arabs of early seventh century started their new year with Moharram about the same time as Jewish legal calendar Tishri, around autumn equinox, September 22 of solar year. Scholar agree prophet migrated from Makka to Madina in 622 CE and the start of Hijiri calendar is linked to that event. Hence it is reasonable to deduce Moharram of first Hijira year must have started in later part of September 622 CE. Scholars are also of the opinion many of the Islamic laws were revealed after prophet migrated to Medina, till such period he followed some of the customary laws, one such being fasting on the tenth day of Moharram, YOM ASHURA. As per traditions Prophet Mohammad sas had said “…by fasting on the day of ‘Aashura, I hope that Allah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before.” He also asked Muslims to fast for two days in honor of Ashura, may be as a variant to 25 hour long Jewish fasting. In the first year of hijra, possibly in March 623 CE, prophet might have seen Firstborn Jews fasting on Pass over and said next year we shall also fast. No where it was made clear that statement was made on Ashura. So some erroneously link Ashura to Passover, Jewish civil new year. How ever by 624 CE, in the second year of Hijra, fasting in Ramdan was made obligatory abrogating fasting in Moharram and during the same year Qibla, direction for Muslim prayers towards Kaaba was made mandatory. Early Muslims followed Lunisolar calendar beginning mid September, added 13 th month as needed to adjust to Solar year. By that 7 th month Rajab started in Mar/ April and 9 th month Ramzan started in May/ June depending on intercalary month when added. Rajab meaning to respect, coincided with spring PASS OVER festival and Easter and Ramzan with summer-May/June +4 # Noorani 2012-11-28 17:00 At the end of Tenth year Hijra, Allah the merciful with His infinite wisdom directed our Prophet to abolish 13 Th months from Islamic calendar, thus lunisolar calendar became purely lunar calendar. Certain objects were achieved here, Firstly our calendar got disassociated with Jewish calendar, secondly average person got empowered when to start a new month rather than depending on a Rabi, finally fasting Muslims got relief from the burden of scorching heat of summer as Ramzan month kept moving forward! Ramzan would return to same month only after 33 lunar years which are equal to 32 solar years. There is small omission we make in calculating Hijiri calendar dates especially before tenth AH. We tend NOT to take in account intercalanry 13 th month that were actually added between first and tenth hijra May be 3 or 4. If we take in account that early Muslims followed Lunisolar calendar then all errors could be rectified. But many of scholars reluctant to accept the above facts. Hope this clarifies all queries on Anthesis of Moharram and Ashura +5 # Zahid 2012-11-24 06:47 Great article. Sad seeing muslims (some of us) are against each other! Pathetic!
