[COSTUME OR UNIFORM?] Put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts. Romans 13:14 Eunice McGarrahan gave an inspiring talk on Christian discipleship in which she said, “A costume is something you put on and pretend that you are what you are wearing. A uniform, on the other hand, reminds you that you are, in fact, what you wear.” Her comment sparked memories of my first day in US Army basic training when we were each given a box and ordered to put all our civilian clothes in it. The box was mailed to our home address. Every day after that, the uniform we put on reminded us that we had entered a period of disciplined training designed to change our attitudes and actions. “Cast off the works of darkness,” the apostle Paul told the followers of Jesus living in Rome, “and . . . put on the armor of light” (Rom. 13:12). He followed this with the command to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts” (v.14). The goal of this “casting off” and “putting on” was a new identity and transformed living (v.13). When we choose to follow Christ as our Lord, He begins the process of making us more like Him each day. It is not a matter of pretending to be what we aren’t but of becoming more and more what we are in Christ. — David McCasland [무대의상인가 유니폼인가] 오직 주 예수 그리스도로 옷 입고 정욕을 위하여 육신의 일을 도모하지 말라 로마서 13:14 유니스 맥개러한은 기독교의 제자도에 대해 매우 고무적인 이야기를 했습니다. “무대의상은 그것을 입음으로써 당신이 그 배역인 것처럼 가장하는 것이다. 반면에 제복을 입으면 당신이 누구인지 상기하게 된다.” 그녀의 말은 내가 미 육군 기본훈련을 받던 첫 날, 상자를 하나씩 나누어 받고 각자 입었던 민간인 옷을 전부 집어넣으라는 명령을 받았을 때의 기억을 문득 떠오르게 했습니다. 그 상자는 집으로 우송이 되었습니다. 그 이후 우리가 입고 있던 유니폼은 우리가 우리의 자세와 행동을 변화시키기 위해 계획된 엄격한 훈련기간에 들어갔다는 사실을 매일 상기시켜 주었습니다. 바울사도는 로마에 사는 예수님을 따르는 자들에게 “어둠의 일을 벗고 빛의 갑옷을 입자”(롬 13:12)라고 말합니다. 그리고 덧붙여 “오직 주 예수 그리스도로 옷 입고 정욕을 위하여 육신의 일을 도모하지 말라”(14절)라고 명령합니다. 이 “벗어버리고”와 “입는” 것이 추구한 바는 바로 새로운 본질과 변화된 삶이었습니다(13절). 우리가 그리스도를 우리의 주님으로 따르기로 선택할 때, 주님은 날마다 우리를 주님과 같이 만드시는 과정을 시작하십니다. 사실이 아니면서 가장하는 게 아니라, 우리는 점점 더 그리스도 안에 있는 존재로 만들어져가는 것입니다.
