COUNTDOWN to my Five Favorite Christmas Carols, with historical background: #5: O Holy Night. This stirring anthem isnt easy to sing... but its words strike a chord no matter ones ability. Composed in 1847 originally as a poem and later with music, it is one of many carols with a political message: a powerful denouncement of slavery: Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother; and in His name all oppression shall cease. Another bit of trivia: It was the first song ever played on the radio, in 1906.
