COUTURE and CARONE named Vermont Sports Now Student Athletes of the Year. As the 2014-2015 school sports seasons get under way Vermont Sports Now is pleased to announce Joseph Couture and Timothea Josephine Carone its male and female student athletes of the year for 2013-2014. The pair stood out through the last year for their respective high school teams with each participating in three sports. Both Couture and Carone were natural leaders of their respective schools and have the right tools going forward to be very successful in their future endevors. With the hundreds of student athletes VSN has to choose from each year, it can be a very difficult task to choose just two but our two selected student athletes this year clearly are well deserving of this honor. Couture a Rutland native has been a very popular and outstanding Football, Basketball, and Lacrosse player for the Raiders. Joey was a three year starter in Football and Lacrosse and a two year starter in basketball. 110% on and off the fields of play was a way of life for this young man, he always left all he had on the playing field. When you asked anyone that ever coached him through the years the comeback would always be, he was one of the most coachable players that they have ever had. Rutland Lacrosse coach Rob Labate summed up Joey in one great quote. “Joey is one of those kids that only comes along once in a while, his presence alone with make everyone around him all that much better. We will miss his leadership here at Rutland but the LAX program is a much better program just for having him part of it”. With well over 125 career points in Lacrosse through his high school career his choice to attend Virginia Wesleyan College to play Lacrosse is completely understandable. Joe was the kid on the football team who you could throw the ball to and he would find a way to catch it. His skills with the ball after the catch were outstanding as well. He was the only Rutland High School player selected to the 2014 Vermont Shrine Football team and has received many awards for his athletic abilities while at Rutland. His basketball skills were felt throughout the state too. A huge presence on the court Joey could run jump and shoot, he was never a selfish player as he was very good at getting everyone involved in the game. Couture, a high standard student with a 3.5 GPA his college choices were numerous to say the least. He was one of those kids you wanted to be around and have as a friend. Joey Couture was for four years and always will be Mr Rutland. Timothea Carone of Castleton was an outstanding Student Athlete for the Slaters. She played three sports in High School, Soccer, Ice Hockey, and Softball. She made the Varsity teams and was a Starter and a key player all four years with her Varsity sports. Timothea’s Freshman year in Hockey she traveled to Northfield to play the game she loved so much because the Slaters didn’t offer Ice Hockey. She traveled 5 to 6 days a week. Many days she had 5:00 am practices and would leave Castleton at 2:30 in the morning. Her work ethic and passion really stood out her first year in high school. She managed this schedule and still maintained a very high GPA taking high honors classes. Her sophomore year she was able to get into the Middlebury Ice Hockey Program through the states member to member athletic system and that’s where she would stay and excel for the next three seasons. Carone was named captain her junior and senior year at Middlebury and she played on the 2014 D-II State Championship team. This past season she was awarded HS Girls Hockey player of the year for D II and she ended the year with over 40 points, and well over 100 for her career in HS Hockey. In Softball she was the starting catcher for Fair Haven Varsity team all four years while being one of the teams leading hitters every year. In Soccer, her freshman year she was thrown into the toughest defensive position when her senior teammate suffered a season ending injury. She was a dominate force for the Slaters for the remainder of her Soccer career. Although Timis work ethic both in school and sports stood out, coaches and teachers all comment on her kindness and respect to those around her. Former Fair Haven AD Eric Ramey was one of Timothea’s biggest fans in high school, “Timi was and always will be a true leader in whatever she does. She has all the tools to be very successful in life we were proud to have her in our Fair Haven school system” said Ramey. Miss Carone will be attending Castleton State College next year, and hopes to walk on and play both Hockey and Softball. Vermont Sports Now would like to congratulate both Carone and Couture and we wish them continued success in their College Careers and life in general, we are very proud of them both.
