CPI presses ahead with Myitsone dam project By KLN Tuesday, July 30, 2013 Despite public outcry against the construction of Myitsone (Malizup) dam, China Power Investment Corporation (CPI Group), which is one of the five largest state-owned electricity company in China, continues to pursue the project, reported Kachin Development and Networking Group (KDNG) on Monday. Upstream Ayeyawady Confluence Basin Hydropower Co. Ltd, a local subsidiary of CPI Group, brought a group of local journalists on July 23 to temporary housing compound in Mali-yang where local villagers from Myitsone area were forcefully relocated by Burmese government authorities. Company personnel distributed pamphlets containing benefits of building dams and examples of how dams have contributed economic development of various countries. A Mali-yang resident said company personnel told them to rely on CPI and Asia World Company and support dam project. He continued, “the company personnel also said they will provide basic needs such as education, jobs, food and housing for local residents if the dam project is successful.” Reporters who accompanied CPI personnel said there is a significant difference between what company personnel told them and the facts provided by local organizations that are made up mostly of farmers affected by Myitsone dam project. CPI officials distributed similar pamphlets outlining benefits of Myitsone project to local people in Aung Myay Thar and Mali Yang in Feb, 2012. Most residents in Aung Myay Thar and Mali Yang are Tang Hpre villagers. Relocated villagers are still barred from returning to their villages near Myitsone dam project though President Thein Sein ordered a halt to build the dam in September, 2011. kachinlandnews/?p=23549
