CRIME STORY My security detail was attacked this evening around 8pm by two robbers who held him up with a blunt knife (the type thats built into a belt), in a dark portion of Broadway in New Manila, just minutes after he withdrew money from an ATM machine. They knifed him on the side of his face just before his left ear and on the chest, but he was able to draw his sidearm and kill them both. Unknown to the two thieves, hes ex-SAF and trained for close quarter battle. A cabbie brought him to my house a few blocks away and I promptly rushed him to St Lukes. My security detail had the presence of mind to ask me to return to the crime scene between 13th and 14th Sts along Broadway to recover his cellphone, the knife used on him and to find his money. By that time we got there, some 5mins after the incident, the baranggay tanods were there. I instructed them to call the nearest police station and to proceed to St. Lukes to look after their wounded brother. I called my Executive Assistant, the ever-reliable Darlene to make the calls to PNP. Shortly thereafter, the police from Galas station arrived, all of them young officers, who went to work quietly and professionally. The doctors in Emergency were just as efficient and equally professional in their handling of the situation. They said their personnel have been held up in that area too, perhaps by these same two guys. Im home now assured that hes in good hands. Both Emergency and the police have my contact details in case Im needed. At a time like this, 3 days before Christmas, I pray for my security details recovery from his tragic experience and for the souls of the two criminals whose personal stories I will never know. I reminded my househelp about the risks out there especially at a time when people have different motivations to make their lives a bit easier on Christmas.
