CRIMSON PEAK, Thursday, April 17, Day 11: I had to leave my sister Denise and my daughter Maddie this morning, as they were returning home after a too-brief visit, and I was leaving for work before their departure. It was with mixed feelings. I love my daughter more than life (my sisters, too), but Im not the best multi-tasker. If my focus is split, I feel Im not doing a good job on any of the tasks. In this case, my focus was split three ways. Not only did I have to work and concentrate on all the details of being a reliable and effective part of the production team, I had guests who deserved attention and focus and who needed a certain amount of wrangling, AND I had a cold that made me distracted and taciturn. So while it breaks my heart every time I leave my daughter, afterwards, theres also a lessening of the strain on my fragile focal powers. Fortunately, today was not a hard day of work. In fact, it turned out to be a day of no work. The scene I was called for didnt call for me to speak, and, unless the camera were turned to a certain angle, I wouldnt even be seen. We were shooting in a huge carriage house that had been transformed by the art department into something far more disturbing. Charlie Hunnam joined Mia, Tom, and me, as well as a grand fellow named Bruce Gray, who plays my attorney Ferguson. I watched as they rehearsed the main part of the scene that didnt require my presence. I cant say much about the scene as almost anything would spoil it for future viewing. But its both a physically disturbing and an emotionally disturbing one, and Mia bore the greatest burden of emotion in it. I know she was sorting through her options for some time before this day, as shed inquired of me and others as to our opinions about what a genuine response to a situation such as was presented in the scene would look like. As it turns out, I wont know what her decision amounted to until I see the film, as I was sent back to my trailer to wait until they actually needed me for a shot. Which they never did. I lay in my room rather abjectly miserable with my cold and slept fitfully. For the whole day. In the early evening, they finished the scene without ever needing me, being able to suggest my presence without revealing me. So I was sent home to my now empty apartment to continue recuperating. I dont work again until April 23, so Ive got a good five days to get over this cold. Lets hope thats enough.
