CRUCIBLE OCTOBER 31, NOVEMBER 1 and at 2 7:30p.m. Put on your warm clothes, comfortable shoes, and brave the elements with a cast and crew of 22 dedicated WJU students for a unique outdoor theatrical experience right here on our campus. The banks of Wheeling Creek will be transformed into a rustic outdoor theater when the WJU Performing Arts and The Theater Guild present Arthur Miller’s riveting drama The Crucible, October 31, November 1, and 2 at 7:30 p.m. The play captures a community paralyzed by terror, religious extremism, greed, and lust in 17th Century Salem, Massachusetts. While the play is a work of fiction, it is based on historical documents and transcripts of real events that took place in Salem in the 17th century and caused nearly 20 innocent people to be hanged and others left to die in prison after they were falsely accused of being witches. Millers play was written as response to the Communist witch-hunts of its time. When he wrote it, Senator Joseph McCarthy and the House Committee on Un- American Activities were prosecuting alleged Communists from the State Department to Hollywood and the Red Scare was becoming the dominant fixation of the American psyche. Audience members are advised that this outdoor performance is not for the faint of heart or children. In addition to the chilling theme, Mother Nature may also add some chilling weather and other surprises for those watching. You will want to dress appropriately for weather conditions as the performance space will not be under cover and is in a rustic wooded setting that will require walking on gravel pathways to access the site. Seating and portable restrooms will be provided. Two bonfires and hot cider will help to take the chill out of the crisp fall air. In case of inclement weather, the production will be moved to Troy Theater and an announcement will be made via the WJU website, wju.edu, by 5:30 p.m. each day. Because of the generous financial support of the WJU Student Government Association, The Performing Arts Series continues to be offered free of charge to the entire WJU community and the public. It is offered on a first come basis with no reserved seating.
