(CS) Grand Duke Henri on Tuesday remembered the first US soldier who died on Luxembourg soil during the liberation of the country in 1944 in Pétange. The ceremony at Square Hyman Josefson, named after the GI of the 5th Armoured Division who was killed in action 70 years ago, was only one of several events this week to mark the anniversary of Luxembourgs liberation by US troops. Grand Duke Henri was welcomed in Pétange by mayor Pierre Mellina and joined by Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, Chamber president Mars Di Bartolomeo, as well as Interior Minister Dan Kersch. The commemorative ceremony took the dignitaries, as well as community organisations and local residents from the town hall to Square Hyman Josefson, where several speeches praised the sacrifice of the war dead and stressed the importance of keeping memories of the past alive. Pétange is marking its liberation with a week of events, which started on Sunday. On Thursday, a special day will aim to teach young people about the history of the Luxembourg town during the war, while events over the weekend include an American rockabilly festival on Saturday and a special service at the local church on Sunday. Elsewhere in the country, the end of Nazi occupation will also be marked, for example in Luxembourg City on Wednesday at 11am at the Gëlle Fra war memorial in Place de la Constitution
