Tuesday 7 October 2014 Press release - For immediate release Djungan people and CSG Free NQ Say ‘Lock the Gate’ to Mining Mount Mulligan Station Members of CSG Free NQ will be attending the Mount Mulligan Station auction at the Mareeba RSL at 11.00 am on Wednesday 8 October to peacefully demonstrate to potential buyers that any unconventional mining activities will meet community resistance, to secure future food and water security for the region. We are supporting the Djungan and their neighbours plus all the indigenous and non indigenous people of North Queensland that realise the threat that Coal Seam Gas (CSG) and other forms of unconventional gas exploration and mining poses to: surface and ground water quality and levels; air quality; human health; the natural environment and animals Nugddaboolgan (often referred to as Mount Mulligan) and the surrounding land is sacred to the Djungan people and all the surrounding indigenous groups and to many further a field. It is one of the oldest continually inhabited sites in the world and is a strikingly beautiful majestic natural area with a varied and diverse ecology. When the land of North Queensland and the Cape was divided into pastoral leases Nguddaboolgan and the area that surrounds it was divided into two pastoral leases, one of which is up for auction. The Djungan have been trying to work with the Land Council and their lawyers to secure their right as part of Native Title to be given first option to buy the lease so that they can regain full management their ancestral lands on all levels. Percy Neal Traditional Owner of Nugddaboolgan said “The Djungan people are bitterly disappointed by the callous nature that the Indigenous Land Council has shown the Djungan people in relationship to them being able to purchase the lease hold on their land.” On last Thursday, after weeks / months of working hard to meet all the requirements needed, they were informed that this option was not open to them and the bank is selling the land immediately. We are calling everyone that feels that they would like to join us to Support the Djungan to peacefully bear witness at this auction as they have not been given the reasonable time needed to fulfil what they were required to do to secure the lease on their own land as is their right within Native Title. Supporters are meeting at 10 am at Centenary Park Mareeba (where the market is held).
