CTET preparation best practices CTET, though, on face value, looks like an elementary level exam, where any graduate can easily answer class I to VIII questions. However, if we analyze the exam clearly, we will find a couple of attributes that make it a rally tough–to–crack thing. January 2012 CTET witnessed approximately 8.6 lakh applicants. However, out of them, only 7.1% could clear the test. The pass percentage was even lesser than that of 2011 (9%). As per our discussion with people who cleared last CTET, and the ones who could not, we got the following key takeaways: Why is CTET tough to pass? You get only 36 seconds to answer a question CTET contains 150 questions, which have to be attempted in 90 minutes. This gives the test takers only 36 seconds for each question. Further, the prose and passages for language sections also have to be read in the same time. All this makes the test a really tough one to crack and score at least 90 marks. Subject–specific content is 40% of the paper For those, especially the teachers, who thought they will be able to answer all the questions in their subjects, were proved wrong in the last CTET due to the exam patters. Subject–specific content, which comes from text books, is only 40% of the test for Paper I and 47% in case of Paper II. The remaining test is of teaching pedagogy. Hence, if an Environmental Studies teacher is taking Paper I, she will only get 15 questions from EVS text book content. And if she is able to get all of them correct, she still has to get 75 more marks in order to clear CTET. The problem is even bigger for existing teachers who have not studied Mathematics in their class XI, and have now lost touch of it. How to clear CTET? *After understanding the issues, we asked the people, who have cleared CTET in January 2012, and got the following recommendations: CTET aspirants should study all subjects, and not count on any specific one *They should take practice questions and mock tests to get a hang of the actual exam — this is more important for the people, who have not taken any exam in last 1–2 years *Pedagogy plays an important part. Applicants should focus on both Child Development and Pedagogy, and teaching pedagogy for various subjects *And finally, if you don’t know anything from pedagogy, and there is not much time left — then DO NOT study pedagogy from B.Ed. books without any guidance. And the rationale, which we got for this point was — B.Ed. books are made to teach you for full course.
