CUJ takes measure to conserve green (timesofindia.indiatimes/home/education/news/CUJ-takes-measure-to-conserve-green/articleshow/19995153.cms) Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ) has set an example in the area of environment conservation. When the university came into existence in 2009 in Brambey, it faced a huge challenge. It had to save 10,000 teak trees that were spread over 45 acres of land. The varsity managed to do so with an innovative design for the buildings. The design was conceived in such a manner that the structure was influenced by the green cover. The natural environment was protected as trees were not cut down. Instead, they were allowed to grow inside the hostel rooms. The buildings came up around the trees. Prashant Bora, chief communication officer, CUJ said N P Garg an architect, devised a design to "go green" for infrastructure development on the CUJ campus. "The idea was not to disrupt the biodiversity of the place at all, as deforestation has dire effects on the climatic conditions," Bora said. The varsity has 80 classrooms and 40 laboratories that are constructed on pre-fabricated smart structure of poly vinyl chloride (PVC) materials which are eco-friendly and do not have any effect on the temperature. Besides, more than 50 quarters comprising two-three rooms each were constructed for faculty and other staff members in the same pattern. This apart, the design was based on tubular structure which also aimed at sticking to some basic parameters like energy saving, using industrial waste material to lessen pollution, not disturbing local soil and so on. Insulated puff panel was used to beat the heat. The existing structure can be dismantled and be shifted to a different location for remake. Students pursuing various courses here too appreciate the idea and say it should be encouraged. Abhuday Anurag, a final year student of mass communication, said, "The ambience that the varsity offers is soothing, the chirping sound of the bird residing on these trees is entertaining. The idea of going green should be adopted by others also." D T Khating, vice-chancellor of the university, stressed on the need to conserve the environment without disturbing the ecological balance, "Degrading environment is a cause for concern. Conservation is something we should think about seriously. With the pollution level increasing the focus was basically on protecting our environment without disturbing the ecology," he said adding that keeping in mind the consequences of deforestation on climate, soil, water table and ecology the administration of the varsity thought to go for pre-fabricated buildings which can be developed without harming the environment.
