CURRENT STATUS OF TEVET IN MALAWI The socio-economic environment - TopicsExpress

CURRENT STATUS OF TEVET IN MALAWI The socio-economic environment and the contextual framework in which TVET delivery systems currently operate in Malawi may be due several factors like the following: Inadequate financing: The Malawi Government is not able to finance TVET at a level that can support quality training. It must be recognized that TVET is expensive on a per student basis. In Malawi, for example, TEVETA spends on average, as much as US$60 per TVET student per term. The Unit cost of training is higher in TVET institutions than in primary and secondary schools because of smaller student-to-teacher ratios, expensive training equipment, and costly training materials that are wasted during practical lessons. However, the paradox is that secondary schools and Teacher Training colleges get more funding than Technical Colleges. This trend or practice will not liberate Malawi from the economic down turn as huge budgetary support is earmarked to sections of education that do not have future education and economic returns. ITS TIME THEREFORE FOR GOVERNMENT MACHINERY TO SERIOUSLY REFLECT ON THIS!!! NOW THAT THE GOVERNMENT PLANS TO ESTABLISH COMMUNITY COLLEGES ALL DISTRICTS IN THE COUNTRY AS ONE WAY OF ADDRESSING SKILLS GAP, IT IS MUCH IDEAL ALSO TO FIRST OF ALL TO CONSIDER CHECKING THE STATUS OF CURRENT TECHNICAL COLLEGES WHICH ARE IN APPALLING STATE IN AS FAR AS TRAINING EQUIPMENT IS CONCERNED.
