CYCLING: World Cup mountain biking came to Mont-Sainte-Anne, Que., on the weekend, giving two Kingston-raised cyclists — Evan McNeely and Kyle Sangers — one of the rare opportunities to compete on the elite circuit in their home country. However, McNeely wasn’t that happy with his performance in Saturday’s cross-country race among the world’s best U23 riders, noting on Twitter: “I have two weeks to stop absolutely sucking before South Africa.” (It’s in Pietermaritzburg, S.A., that the Union Cycliste Internationale is staging the mountain biking world championships this year and where McNeely will be riding for the Canadian team.) McNeely finished 28th of 40 finishers Saturday in his Norco Factory Team colors, completing the 24.4-kilometre race nine minutes and 49 seconds behind winner Anton Cooper of New Zealand. Sangers, whose specialty is downhill racing, qualified 48th Friday, then finished 53rd of the 80 riders who reached the final Sunday. Sangers, of the PerformX/Commencel team, was fourth of seven Canadians racing that day, including race winner Steve Smith of B.C. Sangers was about 15 seconds off Smith’s time.
