Cabinet has approved €37 million for the construction of fifteen (15) additional polyclinics in the Central and Greater Accra Regions. The construction of the new health facilities will help improve access to quality healthcare delivery and help with President John Mahama’s commitment to tackling the challenges with Maternal Mortality and Infant Mortality i.e. MDGs 4 and 5. A statement signed by the Minister for Communications, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, said the new health facilities when completed will result in improved antenatal care, rapid delivery programmes, improved nutrition including breast-feeding and complementary feeding, Expanded Programme of Immunization (EPI) and improvement in the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI). Ten (10) of the new polyclinics will be in the Central Region, the most deprived region in terms of healthcare infrastructure. There is evidence, the statement noted, that physical access to health care poses a great challenge to many in the region. Communities that will be benefiting from the new health facilities in the Central Region are: Gomoa Dawurapong, Besease, Biriwa, Etsii Sunkwa, Asikuma Gyamena, Agona Duakwa, Binpong Akunfude, Ekumfi Naakwa, Twifo Atimokwa, and Gomoa Potsin The five (5) beneficiary communities in the Greater Accra Region are Adentan, Ashiaman, Bortianor, Oduman and Sege.
