Cadbury Munster Under 21 Football Championship Qtr Final Cork 0-18 Kerry 2-8 Five points in the final eight minutes secured Cork, what was probably a deserved victory over Kerry before an attendance of 3,404 at Tralee’s Austin Stack Park on Wednesday evening. Cork’s ability to pick off their points was the main difference between the sides in a game that was close throughout bar that final salvo from the visitors. Cork got off to the better start with Alan Cadogan and Sean Kiely looking very dangerous and they led by 3 to 1 after just four minutes, Kerry’s opener coming from James Crean. Ciarán Keating and Crean from a free had the sides on level terms and Dan McEoin’s point had Cork back in front when the first goal of the game came in the 17th minute. A great delivery by Adrian Spillane inside the Cork cover found James Crean and Crean punched across goal for the inrushing Gary O’Leary to finish to the net. McEoin soon had Cork back on level terms but five minutes from the break, Thomas Hickey was fouled in the square and James Crean made no mistake from the penalty spot to give Kerry a great boost. Alan Cadogan and Hickey swapped points and Kerry led by 2-4 to 0-7 at the break. Cork rang the changes at half time and restarted in determined fashion with three quick points from their chief marksmen, Cadogan, McEoin and Kiely, to level the game by the 37th minute. Kerry eventually got going once again with points from Ciaran Keating and James Crean but good points from Mark Sugrue and Kiely again had the sides deadlocked at the three quarter stage. Then came what was arguably the turning point of the game when Kerry sub Denis Daly’s pile-driver was well saved by Cork keeper Michael Martin and thereafter Cork lorded possession. Thomas Hickey brilliantly equalised Mark Sugrue’s lead point for Cork but Cork finished the stronger with those five points, to one in reply from Thomas Hickey who was Kerry’s most dangerous forward during that second half. Cork now go on to meet Limerick in the semi final on Wednesday next. Scorers: Kerry: James Crean 1-3 (1-2 F), Gary O’Leary 1-0, Thomas Hickey 0-3 (0-1 F), Ciarán Keating 0-2.
