Cadgwith Anthem Original publishing date was April 25th, 2011 and [the late] Melinda Bussino, head of the Drop In Center in Brattleboro sent me an e-mail that morning about a certain resistance in my native Cornwall to the Royal Wedding Celebrations — according to a VPR report. So I found a few photos of a village, Cadgwith, which has its own anthem, which is suitably piratical (or at least has smuggling very close to it’s heart, though people prefer the term ‘free trader’ to smuggler). I like to compare Cornwall and Vermont because both have the same population, and very independent spirit, though Vermont is landlocked and Cornwall has 250 miles of Atlantic coast. The second house down this road was a “kiddlywink” licensed to sell beer in 1820 for 2 guineas a year. It is very unlikely to have just sold beer and more likely to have had “uncustomed” French wine and Spanish brandy.
