#Caffeine is the world’s most widely consumed psychoactive - TopicsExpress

#Caffeine is the world’s most widely consumed psychoactive substance on the planet, and thus has a substantial influence on the collective thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of the global population (James, 1991). Despite this, it has been suggested that caffeine is so ingrained in habit and social ritual, that many do not see it as a drug, or consider it to have significant psychoactive effects, and thus may “significantly underestimate the role it plays in their daily experiences” (Juliano, Anderson, & Griffiths, 2011, pp. 1)... In conclusion, research suggests that for most people, most of the time, there are few, if any net benefits to be gained from caffeine consumption (James & Gregg, 2004a, b; James et al., 2005; James, 2010; Keane et al., 2007) Furthermore, caffeine consumption may make stressful situations seem even more stressful and difficult tasks seem even more difficult (Smith & Tola, 1998). These exaggerated chemical responses, in addition to increased release of neurotransmitters (responsible for the “caffeine buzz”) may lead to chemical shortages that affect the user for multiple days, interfering with mood, productivity, and well being.
