Cahors town on the River Lot 90 km north of Toulouse in southwest France; 20,600 inhabitants. (2002). Cahors is the administrative center of the department of Lot. In the old town, which is bounded by a river knocking, is among other things the Romanesque cathedral Saint-Etienne (1119, rebuilt in 1200 to 1400 t.), and a well-preserved, fortified bridge spans the river. The place was originally a tribal seat of the Celtic people cadurcerne. After the Roman conquest of the area around 40 BC continued it as a relatively small Roman town called Divona, later Cadurcum. Cahors was in the Middle Ages, one of Frances most important commercial and university towns, but lost since its meaning. From 1945, tourism and public administration resulted in no growth. Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik château Caïx located west of the city.
