Cakir et al. American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, May 2014. The authors found that both pulsed and continuous ultrasound provided no benefit insofar as improving pain and function in patients with osteoarthritis in their knees. Anyone really surprised at this point? A balanced approach would include altering biomechanics (ie posting for unicompartmental degeneration), modalities aimed at reducing inflammation and accelerating tissue healing, and rehab exercises aimed at facilitating proper neuromuscular control of the knee and offsetting the VMO arthrokinetic inhibition from the resultant synovitis. To my boys (and girls) at SWAT Health - what an amazing month! So grateful to be part of this exceptional team. #dobetter
